We live in a world in which things occur. But why?
Why do things change, move, and evolve? What drives the dynamics of existence?
A physicist might say it’s because the Action, or the time integral of the universe’s Lagrangian, is being minimized. Another might argue that it’s a wave function exploring some Hilbert space, guided by the universe’s Hamiltonian. Yet another physicist might say some sort of free energy is being minimized. Karl Friston might chime in here, adding that it is actually the Variational Free Energy that’s being minimized.
And then there’s Einstein, the poet, who said it best:
Human beings, vegetables, or cosmic dust, we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible piper.
Albert Einstein
I like to think there is an underlying logic—a coherent, if mysterious, tune—that orchestrates the apparent chaos we see around us. I like to think, one day, we’ll uncover what this tune truly is. And I like to think it will be within the grasp of our finite, computationally bounded minds.
This blog is a journey of discovery: unraveling, understanding, and celebrating the Mysterious Tune that choreographs our existence.
